U.S. 190 shut down in Lawtell after train derailment

OPELOUSAS, LA (KPLC) -

Louisiana State Police estimate U.S. Highway 190 in Lawtell will be closed for at least 24 hours after the derailment of a train carrying hazardous material near Frank Road.

The derailment happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

State Police said 23 cars of the 76 car train derailed and 14 of them carried hazardous materials, including lube oil and vinyl chloride.

There were no injuries. As a precaution, officials enforced a one mile evacuation radius affecting over 100 people in 100 homes.

Authorities are asking motorists to avoid the area.

Hwy 190 eastbound is being diverted to LA 103 and Hwy 190 westbound is being diverted to LA 104 to LA 3043.

On Sunday, Gov. Bobby Jindal and local officials held a press conference in Opelousas addressing the derailment.
