ETX toddler killed in Cherokee County accident

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

DPS officials say a one-year-old boy was killed, and his father is in serious condition, after their car ran off the road and hit a tree Thursday evening.

The accident happened just before 6PM, on U.S. Highway 79, just east of Cherokee County Road 4209.

Authorities say Jose Arredondo, 28, of New Summerfield, Texas was heading east on 79, when he lost control of his SUV, ran off the road, and hit a tree.

His one-year-old son, Alexis Arredondo, died at the scene. He was in a car seat at the time of the accident. Jose sustained injuries to his head, and is in serious condition in a Jacksonville hospital.

Two other people in the car were also injured--Ana Torres, 21, also of New Summerfield, was transported to ETMC Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries; and Vanesa Arredondo, a ten-month-old girl, who is being treated for possible head trauma at the same hospital. Torres was wearing a seatbelt, and Vanesa Arredondo was in a car seat.

Authorities say it was not raining at the time of the accident, and there is no indication that alcohol was involved. Jose Arredondo was wearing a seatbelt.

More warm and dry weather ThursdayMore warm and dry weather Thursday

Through tonight, temperatures will cool down to the lower 60s along the I-10 corridor and south. North of I-10 will get down to the upper 50s. So it will not be quite as cool tonight. It will still be clear with no chance of any rain.   Thursday will also be nice outside! However, it will be slightly warmer again with the 80s returning. Granted, it will be the lower 80s, with more low humidity, so it will still feel very nice! Therefore, it will be a great time to get outside!
