Metro students, teachers counting down to first day of school

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Many students, and probably even more parents, are counting down the days until the start of school. Classes in Metro Nashville Public Schools begin next week, and the rush is on to make sure those students head to the right schools with the right supplies.

"Enrollment, uniforms, school supplies - it's a whole lot at one time," said parent Paula Hurt.

To start school, Metro schools usually has a half day then take a day off, and there's a reason for that.

Often, hundreds of students show up for that first day without being enrolled, so this year the district is trying to change that.

All this week, 12 Metro high schools are enrolling students for the first day of school.

"We're really hopefully this is going to alleviate some of the glut of students who come in who are not enrolled," said district spokesman Joe Bass.

And there are signs all over the school is ready to get back underway. Many teachers are readying their classrooms, and at Hunters Lane High School, teachers are preparing online coursework for the first day.

The school is the first in the district to completely integrate online and classroom learning.

"Students really work well with technology. It's present all the time, so the beauty of this is that kids can access it on their phones or at home," said social studies teacher Josh Cockman.

Many other teachers could be found this week in west Nashville at LP Pencilbox, where by the end of September, more than 2,200 teachers will stock up on free school supplies.

"We're here to act as a supplement to help stock those classrooms for our teachers," said Kim Washington, with LP Pencilbox.

Enrollment will take place at all of the Metro high schools from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. all week.

The district will have Spanish translators on hand Saturday at the Central Office to help as well.

The first day of classes is Aug. 1.
