NSU's McConathy to speak at LHSAA clinic

The Northwestern State basketball coaching staff, led by the state's all-time winningest college coach in Mike McConathy, will be among featured speakers Tuesday morning as the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Clinic begins at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

McConathy and assistant coaches Bill Lewit, Jeff Moore and Jacob Spielbauer will make a fast-paced presentation entitled "Drills with Measurable Outcomes" to tip off the basketball phase of the LHSCA Clinic at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

McConathy has spoken at the LHSCA Clinic many times in his 30 years as head coach at Northwestern State (the last 14 seasons) and for 16 previous years at Bossier Parish Community College. He has posted 575 career wins, passing Grambling's Fred Hobdy late last season as the state record-holder for career men's college basketball triumphs.

"It's an honor to be invited to present to the high school coaches in our state," said McConathy, "and we're going to cover a lot of ground in a variety of ways with our staff speaking and demonstrating during our time in front of the group."

The Demons posted their third 20-win season in nine years and made their third NCAA Tournament appearance under McConathy this past season. Their 23-9 record included a Southland Conference Tournament championship game win after they were edged by one game by Stephen F. Austin in the regular-season race for the league crown.

The 23 victories were  the second-most wins in a season ever at Northwestern. The Demons ranked among the nation's top 100 teams in 11 NCAA statistical categories, including finishing second nationally in scoring (at 80 points per game) and sixth in steals per game (9.8 per game).

All-time NSU great Roman Banks, who ranks among school career leaders in scoring and assists, will also speak at the LHSCA Clinic. A star point guard for the Demons from 1987-92, Banks is head coach at Southern. Another clinic speaker is a former Demon basketball assistant coach during Banks' playing days, Billy Kennedy, who is head coach at Texas A&M.
