(RNN) – When Seth Froom was robbed at gunpoint at his home in 2011, he was defenseless to protect himself and his possessions.
"I thought of all the things I could have done differently to prevent myself from becoming a victim," Froom said in a YouTube video. "I thought of the firearms I had upstairs, which in the moment did nothing to protect me."
What he did have lying around was his phone, which the robber promptly stole from him.
His thoughts churning in his head, processing everything he'd been through, the solution eventually hit him.
"Why not take the most common device a person carries - their smartphone - and combine it with a protective element?" he asked.
Froom and friend Sean Simone took the idea to crowdfunding website IndieGogo, raising an impressive $100,000 in 45 days.
The Yellow Jacket was born.
It's a case that promises to protect your phone and possibly your life, giving you 650,000 volts of stun gun power to thwart an attacker.
"We want [people] to know this is a viable option if you're not interested in buying a gun. The whole point is to give the element of surprise back to the owner of the Yellow Jacket," said Simone, co-founder and CEO of Yellow Jacket. "The whole point is you can defend yourself and get away."
The case comes with a safety cap, designed to prevent accidental shocks, and a switch must be thrown to activate the stun gun.
And along with black, white and gold, it also comes in pink.
Models are available for the iPhone 4 and 4s. Simone said models for the iPhone 5, 5s and Samsung Galaxy will be out later in the fall.
"We've had a lot of people say there was somebody behind them, they took it out and were prepared to use it. They felt safer because they had it," Simone said.
Yellow Jacket is not sold in states where stun guns are illegal.
The case also gives up to 20 extra hours of battery life, which Simone calls ones of the most understated but valuable aspects of the case.
"When an attacker comes, they're expecting you to be vulnerable. This allows you to turn the tables," he said.
