NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville man is hospitalized after he was attacked outside his Inglewood home early Monday morning.

Officers said the victim was beaten so badly that investigators couldn't tell if he'd been beaten or shot.

The resident told police that he and a friend were standing outside his home on Virginia Avenue near Gallatin Road around midnight.

Suddenly, two men with long guns ran up to them and demanded money.

He said he tried to fight back, but one of them hit him in the face, possibly with the butt of the gun.

However, when they hit him, the gun went off. The victim was bleeding so badly that first responders initially couldn't tell if he was hit or shot.

The attackers robbed the men and then ran from the scene.  Medics took the victim to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police are asking the public for help in the investigation.
