CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

An intense thunderstorm followed by several bouts of torrential downpours caught many in the Queen City by surprise Thursday morning.

The storm dumped rain across the city just after 9 a.m., hitting West Charlotte especially hard.

The storm was followed by server al hours of on again, off again downpours, causing creeks across Charlotte to swell rapidly.

Charlotte firefighters were called out to neighborhoods across west Charlotte, helping to evacuate residents from flooded neighborhoods and help police close off flooded streets.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport even experienced delays of 30-45 minutes. Flights bound for Charlotte were held at their origin airport until noon.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Flash Flood Warning for Mecklenburg County until 1 p.m. That warning was followed by a Flood Warning for Western Mecklenburg County that lasted until 3:30 p.m.

Rain gauges along Interstate 85 throughout northwest Charlotte reported nearly two inches of rain in the 9 a.m. hour, according to the NWS.

By 11:30, more than four inches of rain had fallen in northwest Charlotte along Brookshire Boulevard.

"Have we even had a summer yet? Doesn't feel like it," said Charlotte resident Andrew Klos.

Charlotte firefighters closed down a portion of Morehead Street near uptown Charlotte in both directions, right at Bryant Park, due to flooding. It was opened just over an hour later.

Firefighters said they received nearly 30 flood-related calls between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and that a CATS bus to help evacuate people in the Morgan and Sinclair Streets area.

Rescue boats were also called in.

The American Red Cross set up a shelter at the Northwest School of the Arts, located at 1415 Beatties Ford Road, at 2 p.m. for residents displaced from the flooding.
