Coast Guard, BSEE respond to loss of well control in Gulf

A natural gas and crude oil platform located about 74 miles south of Morgan City is reportedly leaking oil after a loss of well control. The Coast Guard and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement are responding to the incident, according to a news release from the BSEE.

The incident occurred at Ship Shoal Block 225 Platform B on Tuesday, July 9. Work to plug the well was in progress when the well control event occurred. Two other wells were producing at the time, but they have been shut down, and all platform personnel have been safely evacuated from the platform, according to a report from Energy Resources Technology Gulf of Mexico, LLC (ERT), the owner of the platform.

According to the ERT, natural gas is flowing from the well and there is a visible sheen on the surface that is estimated to be more than four miles wide and three quarters of a mile long.

BSEE Houma District staff and Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City personnel are working with other federal and local agencies to monitor the incident.

The Coast Guard and BSEE plan to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
