LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Lakeshore Promenade in Downtown Lake Charles is busy these days. A few years ago, the Promenade and Marina did not even exist, and now it's more than just a place to dock your boat: it's a place to have fun.

"It's wonderful. We were talking on the way over here how nice this is and how much fun and it's just available for the kids to enjoy and we really think it's a great thing," Stacy Belanger of Baton Rouge said. Belanger and her family are frequent visitors to Lake Charles and enjoy the lakefront amenities.

But when visitors are ready for a change in scenery, there's a boat rental for that.

"Basically all they got to do is show up to the dock, hop on the boat, and go have fun," Chris Carroll said. Carroll is the owner of Red Neck Yacht Rentals. He rents pontoons to those on the lakefront looking for a different kind of fun.

Carroll said being on the lakefront has helped his business out.

"They can pull right up. There's food trucks. There's the park, the new splash park and a nice big lake to go out in," he said.

Another change to the lakefront are the snack trucks with a variety of tasty treats for lakefront visitors.

"It's the best thing that's happened to Lake Charles," said vendor Roger Roy. Roy said he's watched the downtown lakefront grow over the years.

"We'd like to see more vendors and more activities to draw the people here. Like I said, it's coming slowly but surely," Roy said.

The area is a downtown treasure that might only get better with time.
