93-year-old gets birthday motorcycle ride

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

One Lake Charles woman decided to make her birthday a memorable one.

Willie Landry turned 93 on July 3, and cake, ice cream and pictures weren't enough for this year's birthday celebration.

For her birthday, Landry wanted to try something new -- a ride on a motorcycle.

When asked, "What are you going to do for your birthday today?"

"Oh, I'm going to get on a motorcycle and go for a ride! I want to go riding!" Landry said.

And that's exactly what she did.

"Mom said, 'I want to ride a motorcycle," so she really made the decision," said Willie Mount, Landry's daughter.

"I said, 'well that sounds like mom.' She would do that or go water skiing or do a parachute jump or something," said Dick Landry, Willie Landry's son.

And to Sam Mesuch, he considered it an honor to help Landry celebrate her birthday in style.

Mesuch cuts Landry's grass and when she saw him show up on a motorcycle, she knew that's what she wanted to do for her birthday.

"I said, 'oh no Ms. Willie!' I said, 'we got to ask your daughter and your son and all your daughters if you can do this.' And she said, 'I'm 93-years-old Sam, if I wanna ride that motorcycle, I'm gonna ride that motorcycle,' " Mesuch said.

A firecracker of a woman as Sam describes her and at 93-years of age, that spark still fires.

Landry was the recreational supervisor for Drew Park in Lake Charles for more than 30 years. She has four children, 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

She loves to watch football, basketball, baseball and she keeps up with politics.
