Unwanted Deen products could end up at discount stores

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

New details are being released about what could happen with all those Paula Deen products sitting on the shelves of companies that dropped her.

Mega-retailers like Walmart, Target, JCPenny, Home Depot and others cut ties with Deen last week, and pulled her branded products – everything from cookware and food items to furniture and greeting cards.

The NPD Group says some of the unwanted inventory could end up at deep discount stores, while some of it might get rebranded and even end up in overseas markets. It may all be a blessing in disguise for the suppliers, because demand for Paula Deen brand products appears to have been declining.

Most of Deen's licensed merchandise is made in Asia. Supplies have imported 330 tractor-trailer loads of Paula Deen products in the past six years, according to Panjiva, a firm that tracks global shipments coming into the U.S. But almost one-third of those shipments came in 2008. 104 truckloads came through U.S. ports that year. This year, just 21 have come in.
