Tyler police have arrested the suspect for the murder of a Tyler man who was shot in his residence on Monday.

Early Monday morning, Tyler police responded to a welfare check in the 300 block of East First Street in Tyler. When officers arrived, they found 52-year-old Rodney Earl Walker dead from an apparent gunshot wound. The suspect in the shooting, 39-year-old Christopher Shane Wiley, was transported to a local hospital from a different location, where he was treated for an apparent suicide attempt.

Wiley is charged with first degree murder and was formally arrested in the hospital where he remains under protective custody. His bond was set at $500,000. He will be transported to the Smith County Jail once he is released from the hospital.

Neighbors said Rodney Walker had lived in the house for less than a year. Walker's family said he and his partner had been together over 12 years and this wasn't the couple's first brush with violence.
