Over the last couple of weeks someone has been circulating so-called BP oil claim forms in the Lake Charles area. While man, if not most medical claims associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill have been settled, someone is holding meetings around the Lake area trying to get people to sign up. But they're not too forthcoming when it comes to saying who they are or who they represent. CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

The Lake Charles charter schools haven't had school buses for two years. Now, the wait is over.

The charter schools will have triple the number of buses this upcoming school year, making it easier to get to class on time and easier for parents.

"It was a very long process. We've been working on that since day one," said Pat Kelty, Charter School Board Member.

Both the Lake Charles Charter Academy and Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy will have school buses.

"We put proposals out for bids and we had two bids that we were strongly considering," Kelty said.

Of those two bids, the board chose the company Student Transportation Specialists out of McKinney, Texas.

STS will provide 12 air conditioned school buses to the Lake Charles charter schools.

Charter school boards from each charter school are responsible for paying the company for the buses. This will cost a little over $300,000, according to Lake Charles Charter Foundation Chairman Gene Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux said that money is part of the services already accounted for in their budget.

"These are the monies that are allocated to us from the state board of education," he said.

That money from the state department is the $9,200 for each student enrolled.

"We are using that money as part of the services that are being provided, so we don't have any additional grants nor are we asking the parents or taxpayers for any additional monies," Thibodeaux said.

And school buses are an obvious necessity for both charter schools.

"We look forward to a long, fruitful relationship with STS and also with our management partner, Charter Schools USA," Thibodeaux said.

And for Kelty, she said this will make it easier for everyone.

"I think it's a great step forward for our students and their parents," Kelty said.

Easier especially for those parents who bring students from outside the Lake Charles city limits.

Buses will also pick up students in areas such as Chloe, Bell City, Sulphur, Iowa and the LeBleu area.
