Louisiana officials are weighing in on the U.S. House's rejection of the farm bill on Thursday.

Congressman Charles W. Boustany Jr., R-La., showed support for the five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm bill on Thursday.

The House rejected the bill in a 234-195 vote. Sixty-two Republicans, however, voted no.

"Louisiana farmers and rural communities support a fiscally responsible farm bill. Ill-founded objections to the bill fail to support Louisianans. As South Louisiana's agricultural community's steadfast supporter, I will continue to work on behalf of our state's best interests to bring a strong farm bill to the floor," Boustany said in a statement.

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain issued a statement following Thursday's vote. Strain said he was "disappointed" it did not pass.

"This is a letdown for rural America as well as the entire nation. While this is a setback, we strongly urge not only the Louisiana delegation but all members of Congress to roll up their sleeves and work together on a farm bill that will provide the certainty that our farmers and ranchers need to feed our nation. It is imperative that we do so in order to protect and facilitate growth of the agricultural and forestry industries – the largest industries in Louisiana and America," Strain said.
