Public meeting discusses Nashville's proposed rapid transit

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A hot topic in Nashville was up for discussion at a public meeting Monday evening.

Folks gathered at Christ the King School on Belmont Boulevard to talk about The Amp - the bus rapid transit system being proposed for West End Avenue.

The proposed system would stretch more than seven miles from St. Thomas Hospital in west Nashville to the Five Points area on the east side.

Most of the time, the buses would run in a center lane designated only for The Amp.

The meeting is for those who support the system and want to learn more about it and those opposed who want to share concerns.

Proponents of the system point to the area's already existing traffic problems and estimates that Nashville will add about 1 million people to its population by 2035.

However, opponents worry about the cost, which is estimated at $174 million. Developers plan to apply for a massive federal grant, but Nashville would still pay tens of millions.

They also question whether devoting a lane of traffic to the buses would actually clear much congestion for other drivers.
