LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Lake Charles Police Department has made an arrest in a 1991 sexual assault case, according to a news release from the department.
Joseph Herbert Bargeman, 43, of Lake Charles, is accused in the aggravated rape of a woman in 1991.
Police Chief Don Dixon said on May 30, 1991, a victim was attacked at one location and transported to another location where she was sexually assaulted by an unknown black male suspect.
Dixon said a sexual assault kit was completed and submitted into evidence. At the time of the initial investigation, there were no leads, Dixon said.
Dixon said in May of this year, authorities submitted DNA samples to the Calcasieu Parish Crime Lab from the case. Dixon said recent results indicated that DNA from Bargeman matched samples from that sexual assault kit collected in 1991.
Bargeman was arrested June 10.
"In an ongoing effort to bring closure to victims of sexual assaults, this is one of several cold-case sexual assault investigations being conducted by Lake Charles Police Department Sexual Assault Division," Dixon said.
Dixon also applauded the recent decision from the U.S. Supreme Court which allows for the collection of DNA samples from arrestees.
"These samples will continue to add to the DNA database which will assist law enforcement in past, current and future crimes," he said.
