Burn center continues to treat 4 victims of plant explosion

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A team of doctors and nurses at Baton Rouge General's Mid-City campus continues to provide around-the-clock care for the four patients in their burn unit.

"One remains in critical condition, one is in serious condition and two are in fair condition," said Dr. Flip Roberts. "Their families are with them and there's been an outpouring of concern and prayers for their recovery, which all of us greatly appreciate."

All four men were working inside the Williams plant when the blast rocked Geismar. Their names will not be officially released, but doctors said the man with the most serious burns is in a touch-and-go situation.

"The next 48 to 72 hours will be very important in our determination of what direction he's going," Roberts explained.

Doctors added their focus is stabilizing airways, replacing fluids lost in the tissue burns and trying to prevent infection. Across town at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, another team is treating one critical patient. A second was upgraded to fair condition Friday morning.

"Certainly, when they have significant injuries, that makes it worse because I'm a father and husband and those people are as well, and that's what you have to deal with on a higher level," said Justin Cox, an incident commander with Acadian Ambulance.

For first responders and hospital staff, the sights and sounds of Thursday's explosion are still fresh. Many are putting their faith in a higher power, hoping a dose of prayer helps in the complicated treatment that lies ahead.

As many KPLC viewers may know, I was out for three months for major knee surgery. After years of intense knee pain, I decided with my doctor that a complete knee replacement was in order. Last November, local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nathan Cohen performed the procedure and ever since, he and I have been bombarded with questions like “how do you know that you have to have this done,” or “what can I expect,” and “Agnes, was it worthwhile?” Toda...More >>
