National Weather Service: EF-1 tornado hit Cherokee, Cobb counties

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The National Weather Service confirms an EF-1 tornado touched down in Cobb and Cherokee counties on Thursday night.

In the Cherokee County tornado, top winds measured at 105 mph, and was 75 yards wide and traveled for 8.5 miles.

The tornado in Cobb County had a top wind speed of 110 mph. The NWS is still investigating the track.

No one was killed in the storms.

The confirmed tornado, along with any others confirmed Friday, will be the first tornado Metro Atlanta has seen in June since 1999.

Tim Cavender, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Fire Department, said wind from the storms caused many trees to fall.

No one was injured when a tree fell on a home just outside of Canton in Cherokee County on Thursday night.

A family was seen gathering belongings and leaving.

Thomas Draper, who had been passing by the home, said he went to help the family after the tree fell.

"It was a mess, obviously," Draper said. "They had probably about a 200-year-old oak tree that decided to collapse on the house."

Draper said he quickly went into the home to get important belongings for one of the residents.

"She had her insulin and all of her needles, Epic pens, everything," Draper said. "I went in the house and removed everything - that way she could be OK for now."

Cavender didn't have a number on how many trees had fallen in the area but said that thousands of homes were without power Thursday night.
