Woman rescued from near-drowning at Percy Priest Lake

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Emergency crews rescued a woman who nearly drowned Thursday afternoon on Percy Priest Lake after she was forced to tread water for almost a half hour, trying to stay above the surface.

The woman was with a friend in a kayak, and the two tried to switch positions when the woman jumped into the water near the area of Hamilton Creek and the Elm Hill Marina.

However, strong winds and the water's current separated the two women, so the woman in the water had to keep herself afloat while her friend called for help.

Neither woman was wearing a life jacket, and even though the woman rescued from the water is a good swimmer, officials said the life jacket could have helped her conserve energy.

"Given the fact she was in open water without a life jacket just goes to show that even if you feel strong, you could have to tread water for 30 minutes or so," said Nashville Fire District Chief Tim Lankford.  "Had she had a life jacket on, it would have made it easier for her."

Medics examined the woman, and she is expected to be OK.
