LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Lake Charles Police Department is investigating a homicide at an apartment complex on Iris Street that happened early Sunday morning.

According to Deputy Chief Mark Kraus, officers responded to the apartment complex at 710 Iris Street after calls of suspicious activity with "someone bleeding."

Upon arriving at the scene, they found 18-year-old Edward Wilkes. He was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

At the scene, Kraus said police identified signs foul play and began an investigation.

Their investigation resulted in identifying a suspect, 18-year-old Cody Ray Lucero. An arrest warrant was issued.

Through multiple resources, authorities located Lucero in Kinder and he has been arrested.

Both Lucero and Wilkes were tenants of the apartment complex. There is no word on what may have caused the altercation. Investigators have not released how Wilkes was killed.

LCPD has responded to the apartments at 710 Iris Street roughly 77 times over the past two years.

Kraus said that's alarming and LCPD will look into the matter further.
