LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A storm survey team with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles has determined that the damage in the Oak Park area in Lake Charles was the result of a microburst.
Microbursts are caused by a sudden collapse of winds in a thunderstorm. The winds rush out of the storm and spread out across a small area. The winds can cause significant damage similar to a tornado.
The winds in the microburst that caused significant damage across the Oak Park area were estimated as strong as 90 mph during the height of Thursday's storm.
Numerous trees and power lines were snapped, leaving residents in the area without power.
Power crews say some locations in that area may be without power through the weekend.
