CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell said two-year-old Trenton Mathis passed away from what authorities believe to be an accidental self inflicted gunshot wound to his face.

This happened around 3:15 p.m. in the Shadybrook Subdivision near Lake Palestine, west of Bullard.

Captain John Raffield said the child's great grandmother and great grandfather were at the home at the time of the shooting. Lake Palestine Volunteer Fire Department as well as the ETMC EMS arrived on scene in an attempt to treat the child. Raffield said ETMC Air-1 was called in to fly the child to the ETMC Trauma Center in Tyler where he later passed away from the single gunshot wound to his head from a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol.

Mathis would have turned 3 on July 5.

Details on how the child came into the possession of the handgun are still under investigation.

CPS and Cherokee County Sheriff's Office are investigating this case. The District Attorney's office will review this case once the investigation is complete.

We will have more details as they become available.
