Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Litchfield, Hartford, Tolland counties

Northern Connecticut remains in a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m., while warnings have been issued for multiple counties.

The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for the following counties:

  • Northern Litchfield County until 10:30 p.m.
  • Southern Litchfield County until 9:45 p.m.
  • Tolland and Hartford counties until 10 p.m.

"Some thunderstorms could produce damaging winds and hail, in addition to frequent lightning and heavy downpours," said WFSB Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest.

The storm is bringing damaging winds and could cause flooding poor drainage areas, the National Weather Service said.

Connecticut residents should expect the storm to hit the state the hardest between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The flash flooding advisory for Tolland, Windham and Hartford counties until 10:30 p.m. There is a flash flood warning for Northern Litchfield County until 12:30 a.m.

Route 44 in Norfolk closed due to debris in the road around 9:30 p.m., however it reopened by 10 p.m., according to officials with Department of Transportation.

There were a fell broken branches in the road, however it is unclear if it is storm-related.

According to the Connecticut Light & Power website, 662 customers or less than 1 percent are without power.

On a brighter note, WFSB meteorologists said the first heat wave of the season could begin Thursday. WFSB meteorologists said temperatures are expected to exceed 90 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

A heat wave is when there are three or more consecutive days of temperatures above 90.
