Lake Charles family mourns loss of relative in Okla. tornado

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

For a family in Lake Charles, one phone call changed everything. The aftermath of the Moore, Okla., tornado revealed the loss of a loved one.

One of the children who died at a school destroyed by the tornado is part of a family in Lake Charles.

JaNae Hornsby, 9-years-old, was one of the seven children who fell victim to the tornado.

"For me, that night ... devastating," said Tanya Spencer, JaNae's cousin.

Spencer and her mother, Dorothy Hornsby Hill, both recall watching the storm footage on Monday.

"He was on his way to school, Josh, the little girl JaNae's father, to pick her up from school and that's when the tornado struck their school," Hill said.

JaNae's father, Josh, took shelter elsewhere but the family was still concerned about both he and JaNae's whereabouts.

"Josh and JaNae were missing and I'm like ... I was in total shock," Spencer said.

Josh was found safe, but JaNae was still missing until the next morning when her body was found among seven other children who died at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Okla.

"And it was my little cousin," Spencer said.

A tragic discovery -- the loss of a little girl who was loved so much by her family near and far.

"She reminded me so much of her father," Spencer said, describing JaNae as an energetic girl who loved to dance.

"She was a nice, playful little thing," Hill said. "Playful like little children are, you know."

And now the family is sending their love, prayers and support to their relatives in Moore, but also to those who are suffering from loss and devastation.

"All I can do is just pray for them and pray God you know ease the pain for the father," Hill said.

"Anytime that a child has been lost or someone has been lost, it hurts. It hurts home," Spencer said.

Funeral arrangements for JaNae Hornsby will be in Oklahoma City on May 31 at Fairview Baptist Church 1700 NE 17th Street at 11 a.m.

Spencer is encouraging people in Lake Charles to show support by wearing pink in honor of 9-year-old JaNae's favorite color.
