CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - A Texas woman was indicted Thursday by a Calcasieu grand jury on a charge of vehicular homicide.
Millie Adams Francis Powell, 74, of Port Arthur, is accused in the case.
Louisiana State Police troopers said Powell was driving a 2010 Ford Fusion on March 1, traveling north on La. 109, when the vehicle she was driving struck the rear of another vehicle that was lawfully stopped and waiting to turn left into a private driveway.
A passenger in the vehicle Powell was driving, 92-year-old Rubye Jones, also of Port Arthur, was transported from the scene with injuries. Jones died March 3. The Calcasieu Parish Coroners' Office subsequently ruled her death was the result of injuries she sustained during the crash.
Powell was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and the driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Troopers said the night of the crash, Powell was charged with DWI, careless operation, expired driver's license and vehicular homicide.
