Teacher Layoffs - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Teacher Layoffs

Hello everyone. This is Cynthia Arceneaux from the KPLC Newsroom.  School is out for summer.  But those last bells are sounding with some serious trouble brewing for the future.   How will our schools manage with a cutback in teachers? The Calcasieu Parish School Board will be meeting in a couple of hours at 4:30 to hash out what could be some serious cutbacks in our schools. The budget committee is meeting to discuss a plan to layoff more than 150 teachers to deal with a 13 million dollar deficit.

In Beauregard Parish, the Narcotics Task force made five arrests in connection with a Dry Creek meth lab. Sheriff Ricky Moses says 21 year old Joseph Rappold was arrested at a Dry Creek home. He is charged with operating a meth lab and criminal conspiracy. Also arrested were 20 year old Lance Sonnier, 45 year old Jamie Sonnier, Brittany Smith, and Natasha Long.

And it looks like Lake Charles is losing its indoor arena football team. The Swashbucklers are folding up shop.  Low attendance finally took its toll on the organization's finances. Those stories and more today on Live At Five and 7news At Six.
