LSU advances to play Arkansas in SEC tournament

Posted: Updated:

LSU pitchers Cody Glenn, Nick Rumbelow and Chris Cotton blanked Alabama on six hits Wednesday as the second-ranked Tigers won their opening game in the 2013 SEC Baseball Tournament by a score of 3-0 at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

LSU improved to 49-8 on the year, while Alabama dropped to 33-25. The Tigers will face No. 15 Arkansas Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a winners' bracket game, and Alabama meets Ole Miss at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

The LSU-Arkansas game will be televised  by Fox SportSouth, and it can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network. Live video will be available at ESPN3.com, and live audio and stats may be accessed at LSUsports.net.

Sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola will start Thursday's game for the Tigers, while the Razorbacks are expected to counter with junior right-hander Ryne Stanek.

"It was a very well-played, well-pitched ball game by both teams," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We had a nice first inning, and it looked like we could have a big day at the plate, but (Alabama starter) Charley Sullivan regrouped like the great competitor he is.

"I also tip my hat to our guy, Cody Glenn. He really answered the call and pitched a tremendous ball game for  us. He was as sharp as I've ever seen him with all three of his pitches. In the end, our pitching and defense carried the day for us. It was a good win for us and a good way to start the SEC Tournament."

LSU came out swinging early in Wednesday's game, scoring three runs in the first frame with RBI from outfielders Mark Laird and Raph Rhymes, and third baseman Christian Ibarra.

Designated hitter Sean McMullen led off the LSU first inning with a single against Sullivan, and he advanced to third when leftfielder Andrew Miller misplayed the ball. Laird followed with a groundout to score McMullen from third base.

Shortstop Alex Bregman, who was 3-for-4 on the day, doubled off of Sullivan before second baseman Mason Katz drew a walk.

Bregman then scored from second base on a soft grounder by Rhymes that dropped in between the plate and the mound. Ibarra lined an RBI single, scoring Katz with the third run of  the inning.

The first inning scoring was all the Tigers would need, as Glenn (7-2) fired seven shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out two.

LSU then turned to Rumbelow in the eighth, who allowed one hit in one inning of work and pitched out of a one-out, runners at first and second jam.

Cotton then sprinted out of the bullpen in the ninth, striking out one and earning his 13th save of the season.

Sullivan (5-6) suffered the defeat, allowing the Tigers' three first-inning runs and eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
