Maton named First-Team All-WAC

RUSTON, LA (KSLA/Louisiana Tech Sports Information) -

Louisiana Tech's Phil Maton was named to the 2013 first team all-Western Athletic Conference squad by the league's head coaches Tuesday after leading the conference in numerous pitching categories over the course of his sophomore season.

Maton, a sophomore right hander from Chatham, Ill., led the WAC in strikeouts this season with 89 and posted a 2.70 earned run average in 15 appearances on the mound, which ranks him second among league pitchers in 2013.

Maton started 14 of the 15 games he appeared in and led the Bulldog pitching staff in ERA (2.70), innings pitched (96.2) and strikeouts (89). His 89 strikeouts also ranks him in the top 50 in the country among Division I pitchers.

Over the course of the season, Maton threw three complete games, more than any other pitcher for Tech, and in just two seasons with the Bulldogs, the sophomore has totaled 168 career strikeouts, which surpasses all other pitchers on the 2013 Bulldog baseball roster.
