The Northwestern State softball team ended the 2013 season after dropping a 9-1 decision to Central Connecticut State in day two of the 2013 NCAA softball regional tournament hosted by LSU on Saturday at Tiger Park.

The Lady Demons end the season 40-15 overall while the Blue Devils (36-15) will take on LSU in an elimination game Saturday evening.
"Central Connecticut is a great team and they came out ready to play," said fifth year head coach Donald Pickett. "We were unable to make the plays we needed to make and they did."

Down by seven in the bottom of the second, freshman Natalie Landry led off with a double down the right field line. Cheyenne DelaGarza stepped up next and reached on a walk, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice as Jordan Palmer singled to second base. Landry moved to third on the play.

Landry scored NSU's only run of the game as CCSU catcher Hannah Cooper tossed a muffed throw to second in an attempt to catch Palmer stealing. Cooper was unsuccessful on the play, allowing Landry to sneak home.
"We were really excited about last weekend after winning the conference tournament, but overall we just had two bad days," said Landry.

The Blue Devils put up four runs in the first and three in the second to put the Lady Demons at an arm's length.

A single run in the fifth and a homer in the seventh capped CCSU's scoring efforts in the contest.

Landry, Palmer and Tara McKenney led from the plate posting one-for-three performances.

Kayle Guidry (12-4) struck out two and allowed six hits before being relieved by senior Brooke Boening in the second.

Boening allowed just three hits and struck out four in five solid innings.

"This was a new experience for all us having never been to a regional tournament," said Boening. "We came out really excited, but we didn't get the outcome we wanted."

Fellow senior Kylie Roos finished the game in the seventh allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Lady Demons end the season as the Southland Conference tournament champions and the best mark Pickett's career.
