WASHINGTON, D.C. (KPLC) -

KPLC's Britney Glaser was awarded a 2012-2013 Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Award on Tuesday at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The awards are sponsored by the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR).

They are named in honor of FBR's late chairman, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, a Lake Charles native and a world-renowned, groundbreaking cardiac surgeon.

According to a release from the foundation, the awards recognize "outstanding journalism that highlights the role of biomedical research that includes the humane and responsible use of animal models, cell cultures and computer modeling in recent medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs."

Glaser won in the television category. Recipients were also named in print, online and radio.

Glaser's entry looked at McNeese State University research involving alligator blood, a potent antibiotic in lab testing.
