Landrieu picks up new challenger in Senate race

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A retired Air Force colonel from Madisonville says he plans to run for the U.S. Senate next year, seeking to oust Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu.

Rob Maness, a Republican who said he works for Entergy Services Inc. and owns a family farm, announced his candidacy Monday. He has never before run for office.

He said he's running against Landrieu's support of President Barack Obama's policies, which he says are hurting the economy and citizens' freedom.

Already announced to challenge Landrieu is Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy, a Baton Rouge doctor elected to Congress in 2008.

Landrieu is in her third term. The election will be held in November 2014.
