MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

Recent rain has caused a big mess at a Mount Juliet ball park, where an EF2 tornado struck earlier this year.

At times it's a messy job, as all the rain lately has sent the creek at the back of the park over its banks, flooding all 13 baseball fields.

"When we've got 115 teams playing on a Saturday, we have 84 games. There's no time to clean up anything because the park's too full," said Robin Speight, park administrator for Mount Juliet League, Inc.

So about 30 volunteers took advantage of nice weather Thursday to help clean up the fields on what they call RED Day.

"RED stands for renew, energize and donate. And all across the country on the second Thursday of every May, Keller Williams Realty offices shut down and our agents go back and give to the communities where they live and work," said Matt Walley, team leader at Keller Williams.

Mounds of sand runoff, painting and trash pickup really wasn't the worst of it, though. This was the second round of cleanup in recent months. In January, an EF2 tornado touched down near the intersection at Mount Juliet Road and Lebanon Road with 115 mph winds.

"It was more on a grand scale with fencing, lighting, netting and the park had become unsafe because there was debris everywhere," Speight said.

The City of Mount Juliet replaced poles and all of the netting with a $75,000 grant in time for the season to kick-off in March. That extra help has kept the nonprofit that runs the league from raising fees for now, as they continue to work through a long list of repairs.

The nonprofit hopes to eventually find the time and money to put up some kind of barrier for those rising waters.

The league has tryouts set for next month to play during the fall season.
