LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Before the Lake Charles City Council got down to business at Tuesday's agenda meeting, congratulations were in order for District A's newly elected council member Mary Morris.

Morris beat incumbent Marshall Simien, who was looking to be elected to a third term. Fresh off her victory, Morris thanked her supporters.

"I appreciate all the work and people who came out to vote. Without them I would not be here," said Morris.

Already taking notes, Morris is trying to get familiar with the process and said she's ready to be the voice for District A.

"I wanted to serve because I felt our district can be better than what it is and with the voice of the people, it could be better. I believe in fairness of opportunity and I think we want to expand the opportunities for all of the people in District A," Morris said.

Morris said she looks forward to getting to know the district and which direction they want to go.

"I want to understand what the people and the path they want our district to move forward. I always have ideas but it's about the people," Morris said.

Eager to get to work for her constituents, Morris is also excited to work with the other council members for a better Lake Charles.

Morris will be sworn in June and will officially sit in on her first regular City Council meeting on July 3.
