Demons snap losing streak; beat Southern 9-5

Posted: Updated:

Garrett Killgore and Matt Burns' combined five runs batted in from the eight and nine spots in the Northwestern State lineup helped the Demon offense surge past Southern University 9-5 in non-conference baseball action.

The win snaps a 10-game losing streak and improves NSU's record to 12-33 on the season.  Southern dropped to 19-19.

Killgore knocked in Cort Brison for NSU's (12-33) first run on a sacrifice fly to center field. Brinson reached on a single down the left field line and advanced to third when Nathan Lyons doubled to right center field.

Burns knocked in Lyons on a single through the left side to give the Demons a 2-0 lead after the second inning.

Killgore knocked in his second and third runs when he singled through right field in the four-run eighth inning to score Jake Clouatre and Todd Wallace. Burns got his final RBI on a single to right field to score Zack Costa, who reached on a walk.

The final run of that inning was scored by Killgore when Edwin Gomez singled to right field.

A.J. Funk (1-3) took the win after he came on in relief in the fourth inning and allowed only one run on three hits.  Cameron Brewer took the save for NSU after he entered the game in eighth inning with a man on first and a three run lead.

Southern's starter Camilo Godoy (1-4) took the loss after he worked four innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits.

NSU added three runs in the fifth inning that started with three straight singles from Burns, Gomez, and Will Watson.  Nick Purdy drove in the first run in the inning on a five pitch walk.

Gomez and Watson both scored on a fielder's choice by Wallace and error by SU second baseman Marcus Tomlin.

Southern scored its first run in the second inning with a single through the left side from Jose DeLa Torre to score Brian Rowry who doubled down the right field line two batters earlier.

The Jaguars tied the game at two in the bottom of the third frame when Tyler Kirksey scored from second base on a throwing error by Killgore.  He reached on a single and stole second.

One more run was added in the fifth inning after Trey Kirksey led off the inning with a triple to right center field and scored when Marcus Tomlin dropped a base hit into right field.

Gavin Webster added the final two Jaguar runs in the eighth inning when he hit a two-run home run to right field with Brian Rowry on third.

NSU will wrap up the two-game set with Southern on Wednesday at 3 o'clock.
