Caleb Olson tossed his first complete game of year the LSU Shreveport Pilots held off elimination in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament with a 10-1 win over the Texas College Steers on Monday afternoon at Pilot Field.
Olson (7-2) dominated the strike zone and did not give Texas College hitters too many opportunities to battle counts as he worked only three 3-ball counts today walking only one batter while striking out four.
He threw 109 pitches and used a crafty defense that turned two double plays including on to end it on a pop out to the right fielder Taylor Drolette who then threw to first to double off the leadoff batter who had singled.
The other two double plays ended the fourth and sixth innings both with a sequence of Manny Estrada, Parker Hebert, and Kyle Pearson for the 6-4-3.
The Pilot offense was just as dominant pounding 16 hits including six in the opening frame fueled by a two-run triple by Reed Lavallee that knocked out Texas College's starting pitcher. Four Pilot hitters slugged for a multi-hit game with Brandon Cooksey leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance.
Ridge Gonsoulin, K. J. Semien, and David Dorton each had two hits. Manny Estrada did what he was asked at the plate and contributed early with a sac-bunt and later a sac-fly. He finished the day 0-for-1 with a groundout but also walked twice.
The Pilots will Texas Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Pilot Field. Texas Wesleyan will still play Northwood tonight at 6:30. If TWU wins, the Pilots will have to beat the Rams twice but if Northwood wins tomorrow to win the tournament. If Northwood wins then TWU will meet the Pilots for the semi-finals. Either way the Pilots will play Texas Wesleyan tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
The final two teams left in the tournament will clinch a spot in the Opening Round and the Pilots may have already done that if Texas Wesleyan defeats Northwood tonight.
