BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The House health care committee has refused a proposal to cover more uninsured people in the state's Medicaid program, as allowed under the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Health and Welfare Committee voted 11-8 Wednesday against the Medicaid expansion bill. Meanwhile, a Senate panel delayed its decision on the idea until next week.

The health law pushed by President Barack Obama allows the expansion to cover adults making up to 138% of the poverty level - less than $32,000 for a family of 4. The federal government will pick up most of the cost.

Opponents, including Gov. Bobby Jindal, say expansion would be too costly and would affect an inefficient program.

Supporters say it could save money while offering insurance to thousands of people who don't have it.
