Port of Lake Charles to build housing facility for industry workers

Posted: Updated:

Throughout the next few years, Lake Charles is expected to have plenty of new development and the Port of Lake Charles is doing its part to help as more people move into the area.

The port plans to build a housing facility for industry workers. The facility will house close to 4,000 construction workers who will help with various projects in Calcasieu Parish.

The property designated for this housing project is located off Swift Plant Road near the Lake Charles Industrial Park East.

Port of Lake Charles Executive Director Bill Rase said it would be dormitory-style housing in pod-like buildings.

The housing complex would include an on-site laundry facility, a cafeteria and common area, 24-hour controlled security, and transportation to and from the facility for the construction workers.

"There's going to be probably 10 ... 15,000 people looking for places to stay. We're only going to be able to take care of 4,000, so there'll still be quite a few folks out looking around and trying to establish themselves somewhere," Rase said.

The property is near 365 acres. The housing complex would take up about 200 acres, something Rase said could be temporary.

"We can either ask them to stay or ask them to take them with them. Or the other thing is we can take some of them and convert them into warehouses if we decide we want to use them as warehouses out at the facility," he said.

The housing project would be no cost to the port, according to Rase, just a leasing agreement with Greenfield Logistics LLC out of Texas. This company is putting up about $70 million to build the housing facility, Rase said.

Rase said construction on the housing facility should begin within eight to nine months.
