LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

There is new progress in the effort to get a National Hurricane Museum built at the Lake Charles Lakefront.

The  non-profit group working to make the museum a reality reports that they have now collected more than $14 million from its fundraising effort, including pledges from the Port of Lake Charles and the state.

The goal is to reach $70 million to make the project a reality.

The group hopes to begin building in two or three years.

Upgrades are already planned by the city for the property located northwest of the Lake Charles Civic Center.
