LSUS takes win over Centenary in crosstown battle

Posted: Updated:

The LSU Shreveport Pilots scored early and often as they pulled ahead by a 8-0 score by the fifth inning to put the game away early as they defeated the Centenary Gents 10-2 at Shehee Stadium on Wednesday night in non-conference action. Ben Suit earned the win for the Pilots working a solid five innings in just his second start of the season.

Suit (4-0) threw 75 pitches allowing only two hits while striking out eight with only one walk in the what some have called the cross-town rivalry game.

LSUS (32-15) picked up their fourth consecutive win against the Gents as they put three runs on the board in the top of the first fueled by a rbi-double from K. J. Semien and then a two-run homer from Brandon Cooksey, his sixth home run of the year.

The Pilots did not stop at that as they added a single run in third inning on a lead off solo-homer for his seventh round-tripper of the season. The visitors then added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings before adding their final two runs in the top of the seventh. Both homers by the Pilots were off Centenary starter Holden Novak (3-1) and were his only two he has allowed this year as he suffered the loss.

Centenary (24-10) added a pair of runs off Pilot reliever Rory Young as he struggled to find the zone early as he gave up the only two runs of the game but got a big double-play ball, one of two that the Pilots' middle turned on the night with Manny Estrada and Parker Hebert.

The first twin-killer turned by the Pilots duo came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jonathan Burnett had allowed a leadoff bunt single to Centenary's Ryan Gasporra. Burnett carried the momentum working a pair of scoreless innings. Jason Mouton worked a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning in the non-save situation.

Other than the two runs scored by the Gents in the eighth was a marriage proposal by their third baseman Craig Littleman that was accepted after his girlfriend, now fiancé, threw out the first pitch.

LSUS had four hitters with multi-hits with Estrada going 3-for-5 while Semien, Pearson, and Barthel each collecting a pair of hits.

The Pilots will travel to Muskogee, Oklahoma, for the final regular season three-game series with the no. 24 Bacone Warriors who are still trying to claim the regular season RRAC crown. Tonight's win by the Pilots should provide some much needed confidence heading into the weekend.
