5th grader raises money for hospital by collecting pull tabs

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Madeline Brown has been helping the community since she was four, and now she is receiving some recognition.

The 10-year-old is a semi-finalist in the Huggable Heroes contest held by Build A Bear.

Brown began collecting pull-tabs from cans 6 years ago.

With the help of friends, family and classmates Brown has currently collected 44 gallons full of tabs.

The tabs help raise money for a hospital that her cousin was a patient of.

This year the hospital was able to purchase 7 Christmas trees as a result of Madeline's efforts.

She is one of 80 young entrepreneurs involved in the contest.

Thirty finalists will be named in May and 10 Huggable heroes will be announced this summer.
