NSU signs Pelican star Zeek Woodley

Posted: Updated:

Zeek Woodley, a 6-3 guard who was the three-time Louisiana Class C Most Outstanding Player and won Top 28 Class C Tournament MVP each of the past two years while leading Pelican All-Saints High School to a pair of state championships, has signed to play college basketball at Northwestern State.

Demons' head coach Mike McConathy announced Woodley's decision Wednesday on the first day of the spring signing period. Woodley averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds as a senior, 29 points and 10 rebounds a year earlier. In his career, his averages were 28 points and 12 rebounds, with a career scoring total of 3,835 points for coach Richard Simmons.

"What a great day for Demon basketball," said McConathy. "Zeek comes from a great family and close-nit community that sets up an easy transition into our program and our university community. We are so excited to sign one of the top players in the state who also happens to be right in our backyard. He is a proven winner. Even considering all of his accomplishments, his best basketball is still ahead of him."

Woodley was a four-year Class C All-State selection. Pelican All-Saints reached the state quarterfinals in his freshman season, the semifinals and the Top 28 state tournament in his sophomore year, and they won the state tournament in his last two seasons.

He joins a Demon basketball program coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance, its third in nine seasons. Northwestern finished second nationally in scoring, averaging 80 points per game, and sixth in steals (9.6 pergame) in NCAA Division I statistics.

"Zeek is an all-purpose player who can fill every position on the floor," said McConathy. "Offensively he is very explosive and can score in many ways. His quickness, leaping ability and rebounding skills are a perfect fit for our defensive style of play."

A three-time All-Northwest Louisiana selection by the Shreveport Times, Woodley led his team to a 25-7 record as a junior and a 24-8 mark this season after a combined 34-28 with two winning records in his first two high school seasons. He was also a standout in summer AAU basketball competition.

"Zeek has been blessed to play for coach Richard Simmons at Pelican All-Saints High School in a program that knows nothing but success. Zeek joins a group of current Demons who have won state championships in Louisiana high school basketball," said McConathy. "It is also exciting to add another former player from the Louisiana Roundballers AAU program led by coach Carl Harris, who has helped shape the careers of many current and former Demons."

Woodley, whose given name is Zikiteran, becomes the third member of the 2012-13 signing class for the Demons. Last November, Tyler Junior College guard Ta'Jon Welcome and Sabri Thompson, a Delaware high school standout guard, committed to the NSU program.
