DERIDDER, LA (KPLC) - A teenager is under investigation in DeRidder in connection with a gun found on campus, according to a news release from the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office.
A 15-year-old male from DeRidder was taken into custody on Wednesday morning after a Sheriff's Office deputy working school security received information that a firearm may be on campus at DeRidder High School.
According to Chief Deputy Joe Toler, a deputy found a .22 caliber revolver and ammunition in the student's backpack.
The teen was taken to the DeRidder Police Department for further questioning.
DeRidder Police on Thursday said the teen has been transported to a juvenile detention facility in Lafayette for further court action.
DeRidder authorities said detectives interviewed the student and his family and determined that there was no intent to cause harm to anyone at the school.
"It was determined that the student brought the gun in order to 'show off,' " a release from Chief John L. Gott states.
Gott said the gun was not loaded, but there were six rounds located in the pocket of the student.
"The student showed the gun to several other students who then reported the matter to school officials," Gott said. "It was determined that the gun belonged to the juvenile's parents and was taken from a gun cabinet in the home."
