Locals at Boston Marathon describe the chaos

Two explosions rocked the heart of the Boston Marathon as runners approached the finish line Monday.

Sulphur's David Howard was among five people from Southwest Louisiana running in the event. KPLC spoke to Howard by phone who said he was on the last leg of the marathon at the time the explosions occurred.

"I was about 25 and half miles into the run. I was not close to the finish when it happened. I didn't hear the explosions at all. What I saw was a bunch of ambulances and fire trucks heading that way and like I said, I was probably a mile and a half away when I saw them," said Howard.

Scott Cushing made the trip all the way from Leesville. This was his first time to compete in the Boston Marathon.

"It's surreal ... Just can't believe it happened, especially on a day like this at an international event," said Cushing.

Cushing crossed the finish line about an hour before tragedy struck.

"It was just heart wrenching because my wife and friends had walked exactly where that explosion occurred. Just thinking about how they were only less than an hour away from being in that exact spot when the explosion happened, it was a pretty scary thought," said Cushing.

Cushing said everyone in the area is in disbelief. With security on high alert, businesses closed and people were asked to stay home or in their hotel rooms.

"We were at a Starbucks after we ate. They came and put signs up on the door that they were closing all the businesses, asking people to go home and stay off the streets, don't congregate. Just still thinking there were more explosives out," said Cushing.
