McNeese Relay For Life held

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The McNeese State University chapter of Colleges Against Cancer sponsored its first Relay For Life event in the quad on Saturday, April 13.

"Hopefully, we will be able to have McNeese State University be a very well known organization for Colleges Against Cancer throughout the community," president of the campus organization, Katelynn McCartney, said.

McCartney helped make the Relay For Life happen on the campus by making sure there were plenty of activities to last all night long, such as an Oreo eating contest, extreme twister and extreme tug-of-war.

"All kinds of activities to keep the night rolling and we'll have music and we'll also have our signature luminary ceremony for college students," she said.

But to McCartney it's much more than all of those activities.

"I lost my grandfather from pancreatic cancer three years ago and recently I've had my cousin lost her grandmother to lung cancer and my father lost his best friend to throat cancer. So, it's something that's been in my family amongst all my friends for years," McCartney said.

And now she's doing her part to support the survivors and the victims of cancer.

"We want them to realize that college students, we do care about people having more birthdays and finding a cure for cancer as well," she said.
