Power returning after a wild night of strong storms

Power is starting to return to homes that were in the dark overnight as a strong line of storms, which prompted a Tornado Watch for some areas, hit the Carolinas.

Thousands of people were without power, according to Duke Energy numbers, with Iredell County residents seeing nearly 2,000 outages at one point.

As of 9 a.m., there were 5,400 people system wide without power.  The largest section of outages, in our area, are currently in Catawba County with more than 450 outages.

WBTV received a report that a Bradford Pear tree was downed during the storm, in Catawba County, and damaged a pair of vehicles.

That happened on Robinwood Road, in the Startown community, around 3 a.m. Friday morning.

An apartment building in Charlotte was also damaged during the early morning storm when a large tree fell along the 1300 block of Abbey Place in Charlotte.

This is the Abbey Apartments off Park Road.

"I was sitting there reading the paper and I looked up to the TV and it mentioned that Mecklenburg is part of a Tornado Watch," one resident told WBTV. "The next thing I heard was a loud boom, I didnt hear wind or anything, just a loud explosion."

No one was hurt.

Volunteers from the Red Cross are assist residents who have been displaced by providing assistance with food, shelter, clothing and other immediate needs on an as-needed basis.

Red Cross volunteers also provided drinks and snacks for the Charlotte Fire Department and other first responders that are on the scene of the fire.
