'Hands on a Hardbody' musical closes after short Broadway run

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

A musical production based on a quirky Longview contest has finished its run on Broadway a bit earlier than producers hoped. 'Hands on a Hardbody' had a cult following, but it wasn't enough to keep the musical production alive. It opened March 21 on Broadway, and after only 56 performances, 'Hands on a Hardbody' closed.

"I was just proud we made it to the big show, who would have thought that a little contest in Longview, Texas would have made it to Broadway. I mean even one night there is a victory. A buddy of mine called me and said I was even on Good Morning America. What are the chance's that some dude at a car dealership would make it to Good Morning America," says Patterson-Nissan general sales manager Ray Cox.

Many fans say the performances were well received, including a former producer at KLTV.

"The house was packed when I was there. It got a standing ovation at the end. The music was great. I really enjoyed it, and I had a unique perspective because I actually went to the competition. Two of my favorite parts were when they mentioned KLTV and mentioned Tyler twice," says WABC New York producer and former KLTV producer Marie Biggs.

Some say the production had challenging limits on choreography.

"When at least one hand has to stay in place, if I'm trying to do movement and dancing and all this stuff, it limits what I can do with my hand having to stay in place so I'm sure that was a challenge for them to overcome," says Cody Bowen, a fan of the musical.

Though disappointed at the short life, it did at least make Broadway.

"I am surprised. Who ever thought that the day I was in the parking lot in Longview, I would be in a Broadway theatre a few years later watching it in front of me," Biggs says.

"Everybody gets their 15 seconds of fame and we got 3 weeks," Cox says.

Though the Broadway stint is over, those connected with the production say they may license the show and take it on touring performances across the country.
