San Jose State scored early on and never relinquished the lead as the Spartans defeated Louisiana Tech, 7-1, to tie the series at 1-1 Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

The Bulldogs left 13 runners on base in Saturday's game, as the Spartans recorded 10 hits on the day to give San Jose State (10-21, 4-4 WAC) the victory over Tech (12-20, 2-6 WAC) in the second game of the three-game series.

"Our goal coming here was to win the series and that goal is still ahead of us, but we have to score more runs," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "You can't win college baseball games with one run, but we'll come back ready tomorrow."

Starter Jamie Gilley (1-2) was charged with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four runs – two earned – off five hits and striking out four Spartan batters. Caleb Dudley relieved Gilley in the fourth before Richie Navari and James Ferguson came on in relief later in the game. Dakota Doss pitched the final 1.2 innings to close out the game for Tech.

Right hander D.J. Slaton (2-4) earned the victory for the Spartans after giving up just one run – an earned run – off six hits in five complete innings of work. Slaton was relieved by Kyle Hasna in the sixth inning. Kalei Contrades came on in the ninth to close out the victory for the Spartans.

San Jose State led early on after an RBI single by Nick Schulz plated a run in the bottom of the second inning, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by catcher Jon Nelson to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead after two innings played.

The Bulldogs cut San Jose State's lead to one on an RBI single by Bre'shon Kimbell to score Tyler Qualls to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage after three innings of play. The Spartans responded quickly with two additional runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Ricky Acosta and an RBI single by Nelson. San Jose State added their fifth run of the day in the bottom half of the sixth when Sheldon Daquioag doubled down the left field line to plate Michael Gerlach and give the Spartans a 5-1 lead.

San Jose State scored their final two runs of the day in the bottom of the eighth off a two-RBI double by Matt Carroll to give the Spartans a 7-1 advantage and the victory in the second game of a three-game set.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by a trio of Tech hitters as Bre'shon Kimbell, Sam Alvis and Austin Hedges each recorded two hits on the day with Kimbell adding the only RBI on the day for Tech.

The Bulldogs will send senior right hander Trevor Petersen to the mound Sunday afternoon with the series tied at 1-1 between Tech and the Spartans. San Jose State's starter has not yet been decided.

The rubber match of the series between the Bulldogs and Spartans is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT Sunday at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
