BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The fugitive who remained on the run for nearly three months after escaping a women's prison has been returned to Louisiana.

The Louisiana Department of Corrections said Keana Barnes, 33, arrived back at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) in St. Gabriel around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Barnes escaped that same prison on Jan. 1 and was captured in Los Angeles on March 25.

She broke out while serving a 25-year sentence for manslaughter. She had been locked up since May 2004.

According to officials, a Los Angeles Police Department officer was giving Barnes a ticket for loitering when she gave the officer a fake name. The officer was suspicious and took Barnes into custody and took her to the police department.

On the way, Barnes confessed her true identity and told the officer she was an escapee from Louisiana. Officers confirmed her identity through fingerprints.

Officials discovered on New Year's Day the glass window in her cell was broken and she was gone. They believe she jumped out the first floor window, climbed several fences and left the prison grounds. They added one of the fences was barb wired.
