The following is a news release from CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital:

The American Heart Association (AHA), CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital and the City of Lake Charles jointly announced the opening of the first AHA walking path in Lake Charles on Wednesday.

The walking path is located in Drew Park and sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital.

The opening of the park coincided with National Walking Day, a day aimed at increasing heart-healthy habits nationwide. According to the AHA, heart disease is the number one killer in Louisiana.

Speakers at the opening ceremony for the park included Matthew Welsh, American Heart Association Regional Director; Donald Lloyd II, CHRISTUS St. Patrick Administrator and Mayor Randy Roach. A walk around the new path followed remarks and was led by Ellen Papania, Manager of CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club.

"We wanted to make this day special for our associates by partnering with the American Heart Association and the City to launch the first American Heart Association approved walking path in Lake Charles close to the hospital for our associates and all residents of Southwest Louisiana to enjoy. Our hope is to partner with the AHA, the City and the Parish to launch these paths throughout Southwest Louisiana," CHRISTUS Administrator Donald Lloyd II said.
