After five years, healthcare available again in Grand Lake

Since Hurricane Ike's floodwaters in 2008, the community of Grand Lake in Cameron Parish has been without a basic medical clinic. Now, a team of Lake Charles physicians is bringing back the healthcare this community needs.

Floodwaters from the Gulf of Mexico covered the Grand Lake area in September 2008, but today, five years later, life is back to normal for most. The town is adding homes, businesses and now a much-needed medical clinic.

Dr. Dennis Miller is a family medicine doctor with Lake Area Physicians Group and will be working each week at the new Grand Lake Medical Clinic. "It can definitely save you quite a bit of time from having to go all the way into Lake Charles to get these services," he said.

The team of medical providers from family medicine, internists, pediatrics and wound care will service the Grand Lake Medical Clinic on Gulf Highway, next to Brown's Grocery. "There's been a lot of growth in the Grand Lake area, not only with businesses, but people moving back to the area. Medical services in this area are a big benefit to this community," said Dr. Miller.

As communities across Cameron Parish continue to rebuild after Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008, this medical clinic in Grand Lake is just one way to get healthcare once again close to home. "It's just going to be a really good thing for the elderly and everyone because they just come out here since it's so convenient," said office manager, Donna Gaspard.

While basic services like physicals and check-ups will be offered in six exam rooms, there is also an X-ray room. "We can do chest X-rays, X-rays for any injuries to hands, knees, ankles," said Dr. Miller, "and evaluate broken and fractured bones."

A procedure room offers a space for other services that are typically housed in different clinics.  "We can perform anything from stitches for minor lacerations to full gynecological services," said Dr. Miller.

A clinic that will cover entire families in Grand Lake without having to leave town for basic health needs.

Grand Lake Medical Clinic will hold an open house Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. You can tour the clinic, meet the physicians and staff, enjoy some snacks as well as get free blood pressure and body mass index screenings. The address is 10071 Gulf HWY in Grand Lake.
